On Saturday, December 27, Kari enjoyed the day with her cousin Kimberly (visiting from Minnesota), her mom, and a friend of mom's, Judy O., at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA. The drive that was to be just over an hour was longer both going down and coming back, due to thick fog - quite the adventure in the countryside roads. But it was well worth it! :-) The picture above is a horse made from dried grape vines. This is just the tip of the iceburg of wonders at Longwood Gardens......

One of the bonsai exibits - this one is an azalea tree.
And yes, there were even "choo-choos" in the jungle! We'll definitely take Hunter to Longwood Gardens in a few years, when he's a little older.
There were several living wreaths in the various rooms of the conservatory. This one is in the Orchid room.
After I included this picture, I realized it's difficult to read at this size. Here are the main details: "Pierre du Pont, Longwood's founder, designed the Fern Floor to hold a few inches of water, which was also ideal for creating a mini cranberry bog. There are 1100 pounds of cranberries (a rough estimate of 500,000 cranberries) one berry thick, floating in about 4 inches of water..... The cranberries are from a local cranberry farm in New Jersey." The picture below is a good shot of the mini cranberry bog.
Moravian stars hang above the Hibiscus and Rose display.
And yes, all of the plants are real! This Hibiscus seems almost too perfect to be real....
Ice skating performances were fantastic! Three ice skaters - the two girls were at the national level and the guy was part of the Israli olympic team.
Shortly after the ice skating performance, the outdoor lights starting coming on. I cannot even imagine the time and effort put into the immense outdoor displays. The LED lights were in all brilliant colors of the rainbow - really spectacular in the thick mist (great to view lights, not so great driving home in it).
As if the light displays were not enough, they had the fountain choreographed to music and lights. It was like watching fireworks at the 4th of July...... oh's and ah's throughout the performance. :-) Check out the video:

Looks like you had a great holiday. Sorry we didn't call while in PA. The trip took a lot out of us. Happy New Year!
